Digital Innovation: an increasingly global theme

3 November 2023 By

During the G20 held in India on August 19th, how to promote digital innovation was discussed. Digital ministers from the 20 largest and fastest growing economies also agreed on the need for a digital public infrastructure, on the global stage, to make public administration more efficient and inclusive in serving citizens.

Three topics covered:

  1. The need for interoperable and inclusive digital public infrastructures, respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms
  2. Security in the digital economy to prevent and deal with cyber attacks
  3. The development of digital skills for citizens and businesses to exploit the opportunities offered by digitalisation

And where are we in Italy?

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly accelerated the digitalization process throughout the world, including Italy. Individuals and businesses have had to quickly learn new technologies and ways of using work to adapt to the new context. However, according to the DESI 2022, Digital Economy and Society Index introduced in 2014 by the European Commission to monitor the progress of digitalisation in various countries, Italy ranks only in 18th place out of 27 member countries of the European Union.

Although improving compared to 2021, our country is still behind the European average.

Connectivity and digital skills of companies the STRONG POINTS of Italy

  • Almost total 5G coverage
  • 60% of Italian SMEs using basic digital technologies
  • 95% of Italian companies use electronic invoicing
  • More than half, 52%, use Cloud services.

Among the WEAKNESSES digital public services and citizens digital skills emerge:

  • Only 40% of Italians use digital public services
  • Only 46% of Italians have basic digital skills
  • Both of these figures are lower than the European average.

Another interesting fact concerns the presence of women in the digital sector.

In this context, Italy’s performance is closer to the EU average: ICT specialists represent 16% of the total, compared to an EU average of 19%.

There are many opportunities for Italy to catch up in digitalisation and to improve the country’s competitiveness. It should be underlined that these results do not include the effects of the PNRR, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan for the digitalisation of the PA and its services, which will be evident in the next release of the DESI 2023.

We expect a strong Glow-up in performance!
